Admission requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed their Bachelor's degree with sufficient physics course content

Students both from Germany and abroad are welcome to apply for master studies at Heidelberg Department of Physics and Astronomy. Applications of non-EU nationals (cf. HVVO §1(2)) for the course commencing in the summer semester must reach us by 15 January, those for the course beginning in the winter semester by 15 July of that year. Detailed admission procedures can be found in the admission guidelines. The main requirements for admission are:

Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in physics or other science with at least 50% physics-relevant components. The final grade should be 2.9 or better on the German scale.

Specific information on the selection procedure


Admission of students to the master programme follows a specific application procedure, which is laid out in the admission guidelines, and during which students will be selected according to their bachelor (or equivalent degree) grades as well as according to their performance in further examinations that will be carried out during the course of the application process itself. The latter is intended to assess students' knowledge of experimental and theoretical physics; in addition, an interview will determine students' motivation in reading the course.

The preselection is based on the grades submitted as well as any other further relevant qualifications and experience of the candidate. Applicants with a minimum grade of 2,9 in the German System will be admitted to the next round and be invited to an interview.

Note that the prior degree qualification should ideally be a Bachelor's in physics, but applicants having a qualification from another branch of science with a minimum of 50% of physics may also be considered for admission.

Successful applicants possess knowledge and competences in theoretical and experimental physics as well as in methodes of linear algebra and calculus. They have practical experiences in solving multi-faceted problems in physics in a specified period including finding and understanding the relevant scientific literature, project planning, as well as documentation and presentation of the results. In addition, they possess knowledge in experimental techniques as well as computational skills and are used to work in a team.

In particular, successful applicants possess:

  • understanding of the experimental foundations and their mathematical descriptions in the area of classical mechanics, of  thermodynamics and of  transport phenomena of charges, currents, fields and waves;
  • knowledge in atomic, molecular and quantum physics, and in particular in condensed matter,  nuclear and  particle physics;
  • knowledge and understanding of the foundations, methodes and concepts of theoretical physics in the area of Newtonian and analytical mechanics of point masses, of ridgid bodies and continua, as well as thermodynamics, elementary statistics, classical field theory, vector fields, Maxwellian equations, special relativity and quantum mechanics;
  • the ability to apply their knowledge in the aforementioned areas to physics problems independently
