The Department of Physics and Astronomy extends a warm welcome to all incoming students. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any queries. The Dean's office is located at the Physikalisches Institut, Im Neuenheimer Feld 226, 69120 Heidelberg.

Important dates:

Nominations are due on May 15th for the winter term OR the entire academic year, on November 15th for the summer term.
Please address nominations to the Erasmus Incomings office of the Central Administration, not to the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy! You may also visit the office at Fischmarkt 2. After a successful nomination, the application form will be sent by e-mail to the students.

Application deadline is June 15th for the winter term/entire academic year, December 15th for the summer term.

The e-mail address for all questions concerning the ERASMUS exchange or to send Learning Agreements to countersign is erasmus@physik.uni-heidelberg.de. Please note that since June 2023, all participating universities are obliged to allow online Learning Agreements as part of Erasmus Without Paper. We use the EWP service “Mobility Online” to sign Learning Agreements.

Please note with regard to writing a thesis during your exchange: This is only possible if one of the supervisors teaches at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy in Heidelberg. This person must send us written confirmation of the same. Please note that the ECTS for your thesis can only be conferred by your home university. Therefore, it can only be included as a “project practical” without a gradein your Learning Agreement and your final transcript. Please consult us well in advance of your exchange if you are interested in completing your thesis in Heidelberg.

The temporary study of our students at other universities in Europe and overseas is encouraged by the department. For a one-semester (possibly longer) guest stay, we particularly recommend the 5th semester of the Bachelor's program.

Within the framework of the bilateral ERASMUS+ exchange program organized by our faculty, which is in principle only addressed to students of our department who start the exchange during the standard period of study and have a compulsory module (PEP & PTP) grade point average of at least 2.9, there will probably be the possibility of a guest stay at the following universities:

Due to the 4EU+ contract, additional places are available at the following universities:

Please note, that the places  at the aforementioned 6 universities participating within 4EU+ are  allocated by the central administration.

Students of our faculty who wish to participate in an exchange (generally for 5 - 10 months) should apply to the Dean's Office. The selection is based on academic performance and extracurricular activities. Successful applicants will receive an Erasmus grant of approximately 200 euros per month (students with BAFöG entitlement should apply for 'Auslands-BAFöG' in good time). No further tuition fees have to be paid at the host university. Under certain conditions, it is possible to take a leave of absence during the exchange; in this case, the domestic tuition fees are also waived.

Successful applicants will be supported in word and deed by the ERASMUS representative at the host university. The host university usually assists in finding accommodation or provides such accommodation. As far as possible, the study achievements at this university will be credited in Heidelberg. For this purpose, a learning agreement is made which must be signed by the head of the examination board before the start of the exchange.

In particular, the usual project work in a laboratory may partially replace the Heidelberg advanced internship. If the host faculty does not offer an equivalent to the advanced internship, it is recommended to complete it before or after the exchange during the semester break. The stay should, of course, provide interesting insights into life and studies in the host country, but in principle should not extend the duration of studies

In some Scandinavian universities, lectures are partly offered in English; nevertheless, language courses in the local language are recommended anyway and these are also taken into account when selecting scholarship holders. Especially for the Southern or Eastern European countries, knowledge of the local language is more than desirable from the beginning. Language skills can usually also be expanded through courses at the host university in question during the study visit.

For orientation and selection of a possible host university, it is recommended that one look at the reports from previous years. These can be viewed online using the URZ identifier (https://www.physik.uni-heidelberg.de/studium/service/erasmus/berichte). In general, an exchange is associated with an 'extra' effort in terms of relocation, housing search, study planning, etc. However, most former scholarship holders see it as a very worthwhile investment.

The application deadline is in the spring and is announced here each time. The selection takes place by the beginning of the summer semester, the guest stay then follows in the fall/winter semester of the year in question.  Good study and examination results are required.

Students with children as well as students with a degree of disability (GdB) of at least 50 have the possibility to apply for additional financial support for further costs incurred within the framework of the ERASMUS program. For further information, please contact Ms. Braye in the International Relations Department in good time before your stay abroad.

Further information from the International Office on the ERASMUS program can be found here. For further information, the program officers are available during their office hours.

For information on the wide range of study opportunities, especially in non-European countries, please contact the Akademische Auslandsamt of Heidelberg University, Seminarstr. 2, 69117 Heidelberg.
