The Heidelberg Graduate School for Physics (HGSFP) has admitted its 2,000th doctoral researcher: Marie-Ann Grebe. Founded in 2006 as part of the German Excellence Initiative, the graduate school is now the shared framework for every doctorate in physics and astronomy at Heidelberg University. More than 400 doctoral researchers currently belong to it, working in fields from quantum physics and environmental physics to cosmology.
Marie-Ann Grebe is writing her dissertation, "Cosmic Ray Transport in Galactic Sources", at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics. Her supervisors are Brian Reville, James Hinton and Matthias Bartelmann.
Cosmic rays are charged particles that travel through the Galaxy at enormous energies. Because Galactic magnetic fields bend their paths, the direction they arrive from says little about where they came from. Where these particles are accelerated, and how they escape the regions that produced them, remains an open question in astroparticle physics. That is where Marie-Ann Grebe's doctoral project begins.
