Girls' Day 2026

5.5.2026

On April 23, 2026, the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy hosted its annual Girls’ Day, welcoming 140 participants. The program included 15 hands-on workshops for students in grades 5–13, with topics ranging from neural networks, basic programming and black holes to the properties of light, and how ChatGPT works.

This year’s Girls’ Day included a thematic focus on climate, introduced in the opening talk by Dr. Sanam Vardag. She outlined how physicists study the climate and shared insights into her own path into research. The theme was taken up again in the final physics musical by Dr. Jana Heysel, which explored climate processes and future energy solutions. Combining live experiments with music on stage, the show made complex ideas accessible and engaging. As one participant put it: “Everything was great! The only sad thing is that it went by so quickly.”

Girls’ Day offers students the chance to experience what it’s like to work in physics—trying things out, asking questions, and getting a feel for research in practice. Initiatives like this play an important role in encouraging more young women to consider paths in science and in making research environments more visible and accessible.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to making the day a success!
