Since February 2026, a new research group led by Sascha Diefenbacher has been established at Heidelberg University’s Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITP). The project “Generative AI for LHC Physics” is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung with a total of €1.48 million. After a master degree from Heidelberg, a PhD from Hamburg University, and a postdoc at Berkeley National Lab, this project brings Sascha back to Heidelberg.
Her group develops advanced generative artificial intelligence methods for applications in high-energy physics, with a focus on surrogate models to accelerate computationally demanding simulations and on mathematically understanding generalization properties of generative models. By combining state-of-the-art machine learning with particle physics, the initiative aims to enable new insights at the Large Hadron Collider and strengthen data-driven fundamental research.
