Art and Science in Dialogue

19.3.2026

At the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, creative work is being done at the intersection of science and art in particularly innovative ways. The artist residencies of the CRC1225 ISOQUANT are no longer an experiment, but have become an integral part of science communication at the faculty. They offer an innovative approach to research and promote interdisciplinary exchange between art and science. The goal is to stimulate new impulses for scientific work through engagement with artistic perspectives and to draw the public’s attention to the exciting intersections between the two disciplines.

Sarah Calörtscher: Theater Meets Physics
Theater dramaturg Sarah Calörtscher, who is currently working as part of the joint artist residency with the National Theater Mannheim, successfully completed her first phase of research in Heidelberg in December 2025. She is currently working intensively on her text “Die Physikerinnen (Weit weg vom Gleichgewicht)” . This will be adapted into a staged reading, which will premiere on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the National Theater Mannheim. Following the reading, a moderated discussion between the artist and researchers from CRC 1225 ISOQUANT is planned. In a recent interview with Wissenschaftskommunikation.de, Sarah Calörtscher and Dr. Lisa Ringena, project manager and communicator at CRC 1225 ISOQUANT, discuss their experiences during the artist residency and the exchange between art and science in Heidelberg.

Elisa Storelli: Parachronology
The residency of artist Elisa Storelli, who is currently working as part of a joint artist residency with Art Hub Copenhagen, is also entering its next phase. Following her intensive research in Heidelberg, she will continue her residency in Copenhagen in April 2026. In her artistic practice, which she calls “parachronology,” she explores the phenomenon of time. The specific outcome of her work has not yet been determined—it remains exciting to see in what form the result will ultimately be presented to the public.

Open-access publication: “New Links Between Different Systems”
The artist residencies began in 2020 in collaboration with the Kalamari Klub, an international artists‘ collective for the celebration of analog photography in Heidelberg. As part of their residencies, the invited artists Philip Kanwischer and Alexandra Hunts each organized their own exhibitions at the Institute of Physics, the Kirchhoff Institute, and the EINC. The documentation of the project, titled “New Links Between Different Systems”, is now available as an open-access publication on ART-Dok.The publication is intended not only as a retrospective but also as an invitation to other institutions to initiate similar interdisciplinary projects and further explore the potential of collaboration between art and science.

The Path to Future: Art as a Bridge to Science
The interdisciplinary projects of CRC 1225 ISOQUANT were initiated and implemented by the CRC`s science communication team—comprising Tina Kuka, Dr. Lisa Ringena, and Ursula Schöllkopf. Their dedication and expertise play a key role in further developing these innovative formats and establishing them as sustainable structures within the faculty—structures that will continue to foster exchange between art and science in the future.
