The project “IMBLACK: Intermediate-Mass Black Holes in the Era of Gravitational-Wave Astronomy” aims to unravel the formation of intermediate-mass black holes (10²–10? solar masses). Forming black holes in this mass range is likely a necessary step to explain the existence of supermassive black holes at the center of most galaxies, including the Milky Way. To reach its goal, IMBLACK will generate an ambitious set of models of very massive star evolution, runaway stellar collisions, and hierarchical mergers of binary black holes in dense star clusters across cosmic time. These new models will be compared against data from ground-based gravitational-wave detectors and electromagnetic candidates.
