Top 10 Breakthrough of the Year 2023

Our results on simulating quantum fields in curved and expanding spacetimes chosen as a Top 10 Breakthrough of the Year 2023 by Physics World magazine.

The project, developed together with the group of Stefan Flörchinger (Uni Jena), explored how a gas of ultra cold potassium atoms can be used to implement analogue spacetimes. By controling the local density and interaction between the atoms, we can implement spacetimes of arbitrary spatial curvature, as well as cosmological expansion. We use phonons (sound waves) in our cloud as an analogue to photons in a 'real' universe, and investigate fascinating phenomena like cosmological particle production.
