Master of Science Physics (Fast Track)
The research-oriented, consecutive one year long degree course Master of Science Physics (Fast Track) is aimed at students who have successfully completed a four year programme in physics (containing 240 ECTS credit points). The degree's average mark must be 1,9 or better in the german grading system. In the course of their study, such students in their knowledge acquisition and development should learn methods of systematic and critical scientific inquiry within their field of physics, but also in neighbouring fields, depending on their specific choices. The final Master examination serves to determine whether the student has understood relationships between various areas of the field, and possesses the capability to apply scientific methods and knowledge, and whether the student has obtained sufficient scientific knowledge to be able to be admitted to either a doctoral programme or professional practice.
Structure of the degree
The Master of Science Physics (Fast Track) programme is conceived as a pure research phase of study, following a four year basic study of physics (comprising 240 ECTS credit points). It serves to enable the master student to perform independent scientific research and to develop new scientific concepts. The research phase consists of two compulsory modules “Specialization phase” and “Methods and project planning” lasting in total three months and which serve as an introduction to the theme of the master project. This introductory period can include participation in additional advanced lectures, independent study or direct participation within the projects of the relevant research group. The distribution of tasks is individual and is specified in advance in conjunction with the supervising lecturer/ professor. The module “Methods and project planning” in particular should also provide the necessary understanding for the planning required in the proposed research field. The actual research done over the period of this one year culminates in the written master thesis, in which the scientific results are recorded.

The admission to this degree is restricted by Heidelberg University. The associated regulations can be found here.
German candidates must register in the online portal. A prerequisite for enrollment is that that the student obtain a certificate of admission from the Chairman of the Admissions Committee, confirming that the admission requirements set down in the rules and regulations for admissions are met. Please inform yourself through the Department of Physics and Astronomy about the further procedure.
The deadline for application to the Master of Physics programme is the 15th July of each year for admission to the winter semester, and the 15th January of each year for admission to the summer semester. The application for the Master of Physics must be made online.

Questions regarding the acknowledgment of courses, the level of acknowledgment and questions regarding the examination are dealt with by the examination committee or examinations office. More information can be obtained from the counselling officers.
