Research

The Department of Physics at Heidelberg University has a diverse portfolio of research focus areas: Astrophysics, Atoms, molecules and photons, Biophysics, Condensed matter physics, Cosmology, Environmental physics, Nuclear physics, Mathematical physics, Medical physics, Particle physics, Physics of information, all represented in the many physics institutes in Heidelberg.

To name a few of its many successes, the Heidelberg physics department hosts a cluster of excellence, STRUCTURES, and is part of a further excellence cluster together with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the cluster 3DMM2O. Both clusters have been granted as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German State to further excellent research.

In addition to this, the Department hosts several collaborative research centres, ISOQUANT and the MILKY WAY, that are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
