THEORY OF ANISOTROPIES AND POLARIZATION OF THE COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND (CMB)

Ruth Durrer

University of Geneva
Vormittags

The fluctuation pattern of the cosmic microwave background has shaped modern cosmology profoundly, by providing near certainty on spatial flatness of the Universe, as well as the amplitude and shape of the initial conditions for structure formation as seeded by cosmic inflation. The course will summarise the theory of CMB fluctuations in temperature and polarisation and their dependence on cosmological parameters by introducing cosmic perturbation theory, light propagation in perturbed Friedmann-universes and the perturbed Liouville and Boltzmann-equations, before embarking on cosmological inference, the gravitational lensing effect in the CMB and giving a glimpse on future developments in the field.
