A few thoughts on naturalness and all that

Joerg Jaeckel

Heidelberg University
Nachmittags

1. What is naturalness/unnaturalness? A first look at the three famous naturalness problems: the Higgs mass problem, the strong CP problem and the cosmological constant problem. Other naturalness issues, flavor, cosmological coincidence etc..
2. The Higgs Mass: SUSY and its problems. Other approaches such as extradimensions and cosmological relaxation.
3. The Axion. A dynamical solution to the strong CP problem. Testable consequences and their status.
4. The Vacuum Energy and More: Anthropics, Quintessence and other attempts.

Former abstract of Daniele Teresi.

1. EFT as the only game in town; formulation of naturalness issues in modern terms; the three naturalness problems: the Higgs mass, the vacuum energy and the QCD theta angle.
2. symmetry-based approaches for the Higgs mass: low-scale supersymmetry and compositeness
3. cosmological naturalness for the Higgs mass: relaxation, crunching, etc.
4. the vacuum energy: no symmetry-based approaches, anthropics in the landscape, conjectured pathologies of de Sitter
5. the QCD theta angle: the Peccei-Quinn solution, the axion quality problem
