In this lecture we will explore the fascinating world of designer quantum systems. We will introduce the powerful tools and techniques of ultracold atomic physics that allow us to build and manipulate quantum systems with unprecedented control and precision. This capability is underlying the success of ultracold atoms as a platform for quantum simulation and quantum computation. We will highlight important key results and experiments of the field, and discuss future directions.
