Dimensionality in physics
Björn Malte Schäfer
Heidelberg University
Spacetime has 3+1 dimensions, and there are many good reasons why Nature works so well in
this setup. We’ll discuss how many physical phenomena (within classical physics, relativity,
thermodynamics and statistical physics) depend on dimensionality, treat the hyperbolic structure
of partial differential equations, see how that uniquely fits to Lorentzian spacetimes and look at
concepts that rely exclusively on three spatial dimensions. We run a few thought experiments
how Nature would appear to us if the dimensionality of spacetime was wildly different.
