Spinor Bose-Einstein gases (Goldene Box 10:00 - 13:00 hrs)

I will discuss spinor Bose-Einstein gases, a new flavor of quantum fluid that has been created with quantum degenerate gases. My aim is to summarize basic properties of the spinor gases, which make them appealing to study. I will describe the magnetic order predicted for spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, and relevant experimental observations. Methods of spin-dependent imaging will be discussed. I will discuss at length the dynamics of the magnetic degrees of freedom in the gas, and will conclude by describing experiments conducted at Berkeley on the dynamics and thermodynamics of magnetic excitations of the magnetically ordered superfluid. A good reference for the materials I will cover is a set of lecture notes written following a summer school; these can be found on the arxiv:1511.01575.
