Positivity and the Electroweak Hierarchy

Joe Davighi , Cern

The existence of a modest hierarchy separating the electroweak scale from higher physical scales in nature is, following the first decade of LHC data, an experimentally inferred fact. We explore a possible connection between this 'little hierarchy' and the positivity of 2 to 2 scattering amplitudes, where the latter follows only from fundamental properties of quantum field theory - namely causality, unitarity, and locality. The idea is that, for BSM theories that deliver an unnatural hierarchy between two particular higher-dimension SMEFT operators (of dimension-8 and -10), positivity can only be satisfied if there is a correlated tuning between the Higgs vev and the EFT cut-off scale. This observation does not offer any new solution to the large hierarchy problem, but rather relates the observed little hierarchy to other (potentially observable) hierarchies in SMEFT coefficients in a novel way.
