DESCRIPTION:Jellyfish galaxies provide a striking view of the interaction b
etween galaxies and their surrounding\nenvironment. As galaxies move throug
 h the intracluster medium\, ram-pressure stripping can remove their\ninters
tellar gas and produce extended\, asymmetric tails. These structures offer
a unique opportunity to study how environmental processes shape the evoluti
on of galaxies\, yet the physical connection between the properties of the
host galaxy and those of its stripped material remains poorly understood.\n
In this work\, we present a new framework to identify and characterize ram-
pressure-stripped gas in galaxies\nfrom the IllustrisTNG50 cosmological sim
ulation. We identify Jellyfish galaxies using the MARK–log param-\neter spa
ce\, which provides a physically motivated characterization of galaxies dom
inated by ram pressure. We then extend the phase-space approach of Min et a
 l. (2019) by incorporating the local gas density\, allowing the stripped ma
terial to be identified on a particle-by-particle basis and its physical pr
operties to be quantified. This approach enables us to move beyond a simple
Jellyfish/non-Jellyfish classification and investigate the\nphysical prope
rties of the tails themselves. In particular\, we explore the correlations
between the properties of the host galaxies\, their interaction with the in
tracluster medium\, and the resulting tail properties\, including their ext
ent and gas content. By connecting the conditions experienced by a galaxy w
ith the structure produced by ram-pressure stripping\, this framework provi
des a new way to investigate the physical mechanisms governing the formatio
n and evolution of Jellyfish tails.\n\nImported from https://www.physik.uni
