Detecting Dark Matter in Planets

Dr. Rebecca Leane , Stanford

I will discuss new ways that planets and exoplanets can be used to discover dark matter. This includes a new search for sub-GeV dark matter in exoplanets, where dark matter scatters, becomes captured, deposits annihilation energy, and increases the heat flow within exoplanets. I will discuss upcoming infrared telescope sensitivity to this scenario, detailing actionable discovery or exclusion searches, which lead to new tests of the dark matter scattering cross section. I will also discuss a new gamma-ray search for dark matter in our own Jupiter.
