Tuning injection barriers at Metal/Organic interfaces

Considerable efforts have been spent within the past decades to shift organic-based thin-film devices from basic research to the application level. A major issue on this way is given by the presence of charge injection barriers at metal/organic interfaces that, depending on energy band alignment, either favor or hinder charge transport. In the first part of the talk, we show how ultrathin molecular junctions of outstanding robustness can be realized based on the self-assembly of FeII-terpyridine oligomer wires. Combined electrical/spectroscopic studies reveal that charge transport occurs via electron conduction, and that these currents are injection limited, ideally adhering to Richardson-Schottky’s Model of thermionic. In the second part, we will focus on recent works aiming at the selective adjustment of injection barriers at metal/organic interfaces by means of dipolar self-assembled monolayers. We show that this strategy can be successfully exploited to optimize the compatibility of noble metal electrodes with a wide range of organic polymeric layers, thus significantly expanding the scope of organic and printed electronics.
