Particles for Health

Prof. Dr. Ulli Köster , Institut Laue-Langevin

Particles for Health Ulli Köster Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), Grenoble, France Various types of particles are essential ingredients for nuclear medicine applications. Nuclear medicine imaging procedures rely either on gamma-rays or on annihilation photons after positron annihilation, while charged particles with relatively short range are used for therapeutic applications. Targeted radionuclide therapies employing beta or alpha emitters have recently made tremendous progress in the treatment of metastasized cancers. Research is ongoing with Auger electron emitters that could ultimately provide still more precise targeting. While established radionuclides are commercially available, this is rarely the case for emerging radionuclides that are required for R&D towards novel radiopharmaceuticals. The PRISMAP+ collaboration has pooled European infrastructures to produce and distribute emerging radionuclides for medical research. Biomedical PRISMAP+ labs host external researchers to perform preclinical studies with emerging radionuclides. I will also present findings of an international working group that has analyzed historic publications on the discovery of Auger electrons. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement 101287718 (PRISMAP+).
